The Minister of Culture and Arts, Zouhir Ballalou, chaired last Tuesday an evaluation meeting on archaeological research carried out by national and regional research centers in the sector.

As part of the continuous monitoring of scientific research activities in the fields of archaeology and cultural heritage, the Minister of Culture and Arts, Zouhir Ballalou, led a working session devoted to assessing the results of archaeological research conducted by both the National Center for Research in Prehistory, Anthropology and History (CNRPAH) and the Regional Center for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Africa (CRESPIAF), a UNESCO Category 2 Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in Africa. The meeting was attended by experts, officials from both institutions, and ministry representatives.

During the meeting, the results of field and scientific research conducted in various provinces (wilayas) of the country were reviewed, along with presentations of activities related to the preservation of intangible cultural heritage at both the national and African levels, in light of Algeria’s commitment to maintaining its pioneering role in this domain.

In his speech, the Minister emphasized the strategic role of these two centers in the protection and promotion of Algerian and African cultural heritage. He called for the establishment of a clear roadmap to enhance archaeological research and for the involvement of researchers and archaeologists in various research projects and excavation operations, while strengthening cooperation mechanisms among the different stakeholders at both national and international levels. He also stressed the importance of using advanced technologies to enrich the national archaeological heritage.

The Minister underlined the need to publish research reports that reflect the reality of achievements and challenges, in order to ensure effective guidance of efforts and proper evaluation of research outcomes.

It should be noted that the Ministry of Culture and Arts, under Zouhir Ballalou, granted this year 41 ministerial archaeological research licenses to national and international research teams in the field of archaeology. This reflects Algeria’s commitment to supporting scientific research and strengthening international cooperation in the study of cultural heritage.

The work of this meeting is part of the ministry’s new strategy, which aims to promote archaeological research and strengthen its role as a central tool in preserving national memory and safeguarding cultural identity, in accordance with the priorities of the national cultural policy.
