Algerian Intangible Cultural Heritage Inscribed on the UNESCO List

Created in 1955, the Algerian Centre for Anthropological, Prehistoric and Ethnographic Research (C.A.R.A.P.E) became in 1964 the Centre for Anthropological, Prehistoric and Ethnographic Research (C.R.A.P.E), before being attached in 1984, along with its heritage and activities, to the National Centre for Historical Studies (C.N.E.H).

In 2003, the C.N.E.H was transformed into a public institution of a scientific and technological nature and renamed the National Centre for Prehistoric, Anthropological and Historical Research (C.N.R.P.A.H).

Director: Professor Slimane Hachi

Fields of research: Prehistory, Anthropology, and History

The activities of the C.N.R.P.A.H, as defined in its statutes, concern research in the fields of culture and the interactions between humans and their environments from prehistory to the present day. These are field-based studies involving several stages—from prospecting, data collection, and corpus gathering to laboratory analyses. Field missions are often multidisciplinary, bringing together prehistorians, anthropologists, and other specialists, with the collaboration of photographers and technical laboratories. The results of these studies are published in the CNRPAH’s editorial series as well as in international journals.

The CNRPAH has several laboratories:

  • Prehistoric typology

  • Paleontology, sedimentological, paleontological, and anthropological analyses

  • Specialized photography laboratory

  • Photographic and video archives

  • Libraries of prehistory and socio-cultural and historical anthropology

  • Audiovisual laboratory

  • In creation: Doctoral school

  • Restoration laboratory

  • Lybica (annual academic journal)

  • Majallat Et-Tarikh
